Out to prove 2023 was no fluke, D-backs open vs. Rockies

Two seasons after losing 110 games, the Arizona Diamondbacks played in the World Series last season. The stunning accomplishment makes the Diamondbacks an intriguing club as they open the 2024 season against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night at Phoenix. Arizona (84-78) squeaked into the playoffs by landing the third and final National League wild-card berth. What followed was a magical playoff run that ended with a five-game loss to the Texas Rangers in the World Series. This time around, the Diamondbacks are facing big expectations. "It's uncharted territory for us, so it's like, how are we going to respond? How is it going to affect us?" Arizona ace right-hander Zac Gallen said. "If we get off to a slow start in the first month, how are we going to …

Tanguy Ndombele: ‘If you know Mourinho then you understand how he behaves’

Tanguy Ndombele was relaxing at his apartment in Hadley Wood, north London. It was 7 April 2020, the coronavirus crisis had taken grip, the United Kingdom was in lockdown and Ndombele did not expect any visitors. And, certainly, not the visitor he got. It was José Mourinho, his manager at Tottenham, summoning him outside for an impromptu fitness session on the common.

“On a scale of one to 10, how surprised was I?” Ndombele says. “Honestly? Ten. I asked why I should have to run and he said I just had to do it. So it was nothing, really. Afterwards he congratulated me and said that I’d run well.”

Uefa opens disciplinary proceedings against Celtic over supporters’ banner

Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic after their supporters held up a banner that read “Fuck the Crown” during their Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, Rangers have escaped punishment despite defying Uefa by playing the national anthem in tribute to the Queen before their 3-0 thrashing by Napoli at Ibrox.

Celtic fans also unfurled another banner that said “Sorry for your loss Michael Fagan”, a reference to the intruder who broke into the Queen’s Buckingham Palace bedroom in 1982. However, a Uefa spokesperson confirmed that it was only investigating the banner relating to the Queen, which led to an apology from BT Sport’s commentators.

Dortmund beware: PSG are coming good at just the right time

This was the situation Paris Saint-Germain faced on Wednesday night at the Stade du Moustoir: Luis Enrique sent out a heavily rotated team, the visitors having all but secured the league title, and they were away to a Lorient side with talented individuals, fighting to stay in the top flight. It sounded like a recipe for dropped points and there is a precedent: PSG closed out the end of last season with a draw to Strasbourg and a loss to Clermont at home. The latter result certainly dampened the title celebrations at the Parc des Princes.

However, the leaders barely blinked, even with Achraf Hakimi, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Marquinhos, Bradley Barcola and Vitinha not travelling to Brittany. A brace each from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé …

NFC West: 2024 Outlook, Preview, Predictions

NFC West Division preview 2024 predicted order of finish, record San Francisco 49ers (12-5) The 49ers have plenty of playmakers and signed "hold-in" WR Brandon Aiyuk to an extension. But LT Trent Williams remains a holdout and without him the line might not give Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Aiyuk and Co. enough time to make plays. Will the 49ers regress after losing (again) to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl? Los Angeles Rams (10-7) With WR Cooper Kupp returning, the Rams have one of the best receiving tandems in the league with Puka Nacua, who was the runner-up for Offensive Rookie of the Year last season. RB Kyren Williams also had a breakout season in 2023, giving QB Matthew Stafford plenty of options. One massive worry: the Rams have to re…

Olympic Ski Racer Taken Away On Stretcher After Nasty Crash

Canadian ski cross racer Chris Del Bosco fought gravity and lost during a qualifying heat, losing control at the worst moment and catapulting some 30 feet down the course and landing hard on his right side. As a longer video shows (he’s in Heat 8), Del Bosco misjudged the previous jump and went too far, which caused him to overcorrect, lose his balance just before the fateful jump, and lean back too far back. Cruelly enough, Del Bosco himself asked for changes to the course’s jumps to prevent a situation exactly like his, and he even helped organizers smooth over a few portions of the course. After the crash, Del Bosco stayed on the snow for 10 minutes before being stretchered off and taken to the hospital. A Team Canada doctor told CBC that Del Bosco was stable and was being tr…

Why Your Team Sucks 2015: Oakland Raiders

Some people are fans of the Oakland Raiders. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Oakland Raiders. This 2015 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Your team: Oakland Raiders Your 2014 record: 3-13, featuring the league’s worst point differential (-199). “ What this ball represents and what this hole represents are the first four games of the season. The first quarter of our season … This ball, to me, goes in this hole! Okay?” You will not find a more motivational hole than the hole Tony Sparano dug. Sparano, you will recall, was promoted to interim head coach (all Raiders coaches should be labeled as “interim”) after Dennis Allen was canned after just four games last season. They could have canned Allen a full year ago. Instead, they burned o…
