O´Neill hopes to blow Bale off course

Michael O Neill will call upon his experience of attempting to shackle Cristiano Ronaldo when Northern Ireland face Gareth Bale and Wales in the last-16 of Euro 2016.

Wales are favourites to progress from this Battle of Britain in Paris, largely down to the supreme capabilities of Bale the Real Madrid star having scored three goals in as many games on the way to securing top spot in Group B.

O Neill twice pitted his wits against Ronaldo during qualification for the 2014 World Cup, leaving Bale s club team-mate goalless on his 100th cap a 1-1 draw in Porto before being on the receiving end of a hat-trick in a 4-2 Belfast loss.

Gareth Bale s a huge player for Wales, he s shown that in the tournament already and he s shown that in qualification, O Neill told a pre-…

Harper backs Phelan for permanent Hull role

Steve Harper has called on Hull City s owners to hand Mike Phelan the manager s job on a permanent basis after their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Phelan took temporary control at the KCOM Stadium after Steve Bruce resigned three weeks before the start of the campaign due to frustrations at the lack of transfer activity at the club.

A host of names were linked with the role, including Gianfranco Zola and Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, however an appointment was not forthcoming, leaving Phelan – Bruce s assistant – to start the season in charge.

Goals from Adama Diomande and Robert Snodgrass gave Phelan a winning start as champions Leicester City were beaten 2-1 on the opening weekend, and the 53-year-old made it two from two with Saturday s 2-…

Gaston Ramirez eager to impress at Hull City

Uruguay international midfielder Gaston Ramirez cannot wait to get started at the KC Stadium following a deadline day move to Hull City.

Ramirez, 23, joined the Tigers on a season-long loan deal from Southampton on Monday night.

The former Penarol star joined the Saints from Italian Serie A side Bologna for a then club-record fee of £12 million in August 2012, but was dropped in favour of Northern Ireland international Steven Davis last season.

Davis, 29, has kept his starting-place in 2014/15, with Ramirez having done very little to impress new manager Ronald Koeman.

I m so happy to be here and I m eager to get started, Ramirez told the Tigers official website.

I want to show the Hull City fans what I can do. It was a quick …

Tottenham defender Steven Caulker wants revenge against Arsenal after suffering a 4-1 defeat in the only north London derby he has played in.

And Caulker, who scored his first goal for England in midweek, is relishing his first ever Premier League north London derby after stepping up to the Tottenham first team this season.

It will be very surreal knowing that in the space of two years I will be playing them again in a Tottenham shirt in a league game, he told the Spurs website.

Caulker tasted victory against Arsenal in a 3-2 win with Swansea while on loan last season, and is keen for a repeat outcome on Saturday.
